Some homeowners describe their vision and wait for the transformation to happen. For homeowner Dave Currie, he prefers to pick up the tools himself. A seasoned DIYer, he has spent years turning the renovation ideas in his mind into finished spaces with his own two hands.

In October 2025, Currie took on his biggest project to date: renovating the exterior of his two-story Michigan home, bringing the same hands-on approach that has defined so many of his projects over the years. Rather than overseeing the transformation like most homeowners do, Currie had the skills and experience to bring that vision to life himself. Along the way, he had to make decisions that would ultimately shape the long-term durability of the structure – and it started with the siding.

Homeowner do-it-yourself renovation completed with Everlast siding.

The previous vinyl siding was installed in 1998, had warped over the years, and needed an overhaul. As part of the exterior renovation, Currie planned to replace the home’s windows, doors, trim, and siding, taking on approximately 900 hours of work to transform the entire exterior. Given the scope of the project, he was looking for a siding product that would simplify installation without sacrificing the durability or appearance he desired.

“We had vinyl siding on the house initially, and I wanted to move to something that was more upscale,” said Currie. “I wasn’t happy with the way the vinyl siding shrunk and expanded.”

With his vision for the exterior, Currie began searching for a product that would give his home a timeless, refined look while addressing the issues he had experienced with vinyl siding. Because he would be installing the siding himself, he also needed a material that would be manageable for a single installer on a renovation of this scale.

“I actually went to get a quote for fiber cement, but I couldn’t have installed that myself, and it would have needed paint touch ups for years to come. That didn’t appeal to me much,” said Currie.

After exploring his options, Currie chose Everlast® advanced composite siding.

Unlike fiber cement, Everlast siding’s lightweight composition made a one-man installation possible, while its durable construction and EZStack® design helped further support a straightforward and efficient process. With the product’s interlocking EZStack joinery, panels neatly sit in and are supported by the one below it, enabling a single contractor or DIYer to safely handle and install the lightweight planks.

Plus, the product installs without specialized cutting equipment and produces no harmful silica dust when cut. Everlast siding’s design also eliminates exposed face nails, caulking, and the need for painting. These attributes allowed Currie to achieve a clean, seamless appearance without future maintenance concerns.

Highly UV-resistant and virtually impervious to water, Everlast siding is engineered to maintain its appearance and performance through changing temperatures, intense sunlight, freeze/thaw cycles, and other demanding conditions without warping, bowing, or splitting. This addressed several of the issues Currie had experienced with vinyl. The material’s proprietary C CORE® composite substrate also provides exceptional strength, resilience, and dimensional stability, helping deliver long-term durability in conditions where traditional siding materials often have limitations.

From a design perspective, the Curries knew they wanted to incorporate black windows and doors for a sophisticated appearance. Their choice of Everlast Lap Siding in Storm Grey allowed them to create a cohesive, dark, monochromatic palette across the home’s exterior. The decision helped bring a sense of balance to the home’s existing red and grey brick facade while allowing the contrasting black windows and doors to become a defining architectural feature.

However, for Currie, choosing Everlast siding was about more than just updating the appearance of his home. It was about finding and installing a product that could deliver the durability and low-maintenance performance needed to withstand Michigan’s demanding year-round weather.

The result is an exterior that reflects the care, craftsmanship, and countless hours of hands-on work Currie invested in the renovation.

The Currie home was completed in January 2026. The Everlast siding for the project was supplied by ABC Supply’s New Hudson, Michigan, location.
